The Stories Behind The Songs
You Don't Have To Leave The Old Folks Out
There was a radio station here in Dallas that advertised  that all they would play would be "young Country". They would play part of a Merle Haggard song, for instance, and while it was playing, they would say "this Is Old Country".Then they would play part of a Travis Tritt song and say "this is Young Country". It teed me off, so I wrote this song.
You're The Best Ex-Wife I Ever Had
I saw a personnel ad in the Dallas Observer from some guy telling some gal she was "the best ex-wife I ever had". I HAD to write it!
In 1988 I fell in love with Diane Counts. I let her have some tapes of me singing. She wanted to listen to me while she did housework. Well, on one of the tapes, she heard me say "Diane Honey, would you get me a beer?" The Diane on the tape was from 1984. Well, she got all hot and said I could just call her "Martha", her first name. She hated it.... So I surprised her with this song.
