When Mike first said he would do a gig with me, and I got one, I was sort of worried. I knew he had played with a lot of great musicians and entertainers. I was just hoping he liked me. Well we worked jobs in Dallas, Desoto, Corsicana, and Waco so I guess he did.
He told me at the Ronnie Dawson benefit I was one of the best entertainers he had worked with. Made me feel great. I know that when I was with him I didn't worry about pulling some new song I had written on him. He played whatever I played and did it well.
I had a habit of calling out the key to a song before I did it. I had guitar players in the past gripe about me just going into a song without telling them the key. Mike said "Joe don't worry about the key. I will be there".
That's why, if you notice, I will say the key sometimes (out of habit) and sometimes I didn't. Never bothered Michael. He just picked. Loved it. Loooovvveeed it.
So when we played I just did my thing and turned Michael loose. . And it goes without saying, but I will say it.... Mike was one of the best guitar pickers I ever had the pleasure of working with.
